So how do YOU keep a positive attitude?

Usually, I am the kind of person who has a natural positive attitude.   I don’t have to make a conscious effort to be nice to people, most often, that comes naturally as well.   Lately, I’ve been under an abnormal amount of stress and I’ve really noticed the toll its taking on me.   I’m not sleeping well, I’m short with loved ones, my migraines are more frequent, just a lot of unpleasantness going on that I can attribute directly to my stress levels.

For me, one major stressor is a feeling of helplessness, so I have taken the steps that I can control to relieve some of the stress.  Unfortunately, some of it is beyond my control, so I need some major stress management help.

I know several techniques from when I worked in health and fitness, but I want to know what WORKS for you.   I do regular breathing techniques and I’ve started working out again.  That does help me a lot but surely, there’s something that hasn’t crossed my mind.  (And yes, “drinking many beers” is another technique I’ve utilized in the past!)

I’m just the opposite, cynical, generally unhappy and a bit negative, but it’s a place that I feel I exist naturally. It’s not quite depression, and I’m really not manic either. One of the big disagreements my wife and I have had over the years is that she tries to make me happy which only makes me worse. I only get so happy in general, and people actively trying to cheer me up or make me happy never, ever works. I just have a different natural happiness quotient than most people.

On thing that helps me, that may not be on option for you, is to smoke plenty of leafy greens. It helps me maintain a more even mood, keeps me from sinking too much into bitterness and anxiety. It helps me be more relaxed and accepting.

I hope you figure this out and feel better soon.

Thanks sam! I think B is more like you. I’m just generally a happy person so its been frustrating to be a grump. Its making me not like who I am. I think it’ll all work itself out, its just the meantime thats getting to me.

  3. There’s always yoga. Or drugs, as you mentioned. Or sex.

But in general, if something is stressing you out a lot, your best bet is to get rid of the stressor. Otherwise, you’re just trying to mitigate something that’s always going to be there.

  4. Oh, right. Um … yeah. Carry on, then.

Xanex. Lots and lots of Xanex. Just kidding. I don’t take any mood pills. Don’t want your mom to read this and think I’m on Xanex all the time. But what do I have to worry about since Sam is telling everyone to do drugs! Ha. Cheer up! Don’t let the negative things get to you b/c then you let it win. I like to take my doggie for a walk when I’m stressed and throw a tennis ball as damn far as I think I can. That helps some. (unless you run into a bunch of homeless drunk, druggies on the greenway!)

Exercise is an excellent elixer; Socializing with friends (don’t isolate); dancing with wild abandon to great music (live or at home with CDs); take a long walk on a greenway
