Weekly Money Check-Up

1. The most I’ve spent this last week was on work clothes from a clearance sale. I feel only slightly guilty because I really needed the items and they we’re deeply discounted.  I got three skirts, a jacket and a blouse for under $100.  Not bad, I say.

2. Today I feel  pretty good towards money. I did as I’d hoped I would and immediately when my paycheck went into my account, I pulled what was remaining from my last one into my savings account.  Win!

3. Money can’t buy happiness. One free/inexpensive thing I did last week that made me happy was watch a movie with my brother.

4. I will consider this week a success if I bring my lunch at least two days.

5. The TV show I am most excited about this season is Eastbound and Down.  I love that show.  I know it’s pretty raunchy at times, but it makes me laugh.

Wherefore art thou kindness

As most of you know, my dear friend Katie lost her son this year.  Today is his 19th birthday.  Katie and Henry’s story is featured on the Daily Beast today and in honor of Henry, her sister is asking friends and supporters to participate in Acts of Kindness for Henry.

I think it’s a beautiful tribute to a beautiful person.  I’ve struggled all day to think of something kind to do.  I can say I have been kind to those I’ve interacted with today, more so than usual.  I drove by Katie’s house on my way to lunch (she lives near my home, I’m not creepy) and upon seeing her car in the driveway, I immediately wanted my act of kindness to be grabbing flowers or bright balloons and running to her porch.  I felt like that might be an intrusion and I knew it was no coincidence she was home today, so I gave her that privacy.

I thought about filling all the parking meters downtown but then realized that most spaces aren’t metered and by the time I got enough change, I needed to be back to work.  By the time I get off, the meters w0n’t be ticketing.  I thought of buying flowers for my coworkers, but the day before payday made that a not-so-wise decision.

So today, I am still struggling to find my specific act of kindness.  In the meantime, in honor of Henry’s family, I’m reaching out to those I hold dear and telling them I love them.  I’m making time to see them.  And I will make sure they know, nothing is worth more than seeing them another day.

But, I just might throw a good joke in there too because, Henry wouldn’t have it any other way.

Oh my goodness

One of my favorite people in the world, just purchased this car.

And the kicker.  He’s 70!

MPP has taken a hiatus, so I’m on my own for this week’s  Money Check Up.  (I also found of she’s only 25 which makes me feel incredible old and impossibly immature about my financial habits. But she got herself out of $13,000 worth of debt and saved another $10,000 so I just need to shut up and keep paying attention . )

1. The most I’ve spent this last week was on groceries and miscellany at Target.  I did splurge and buy a top that was on clearance for $4.98 and a cardigan that I will wear, year round, for $9.98.  I do feel pretty good that I had to really think for a while to come up with the answer.  That’s definitely a move in the right direction.

2. Today I feel inspired towards money.

3. Money can’t buy happiness. One free/inexpensive thing I did last week that made me happy was go for a drive with the windows down.  We’ve finally gotten to my favorite part of the year where the temperatures are a bit cooler and there’s a slight breeze. It was perfect rolling the windows down and just enjoying the ride…

4. I will consider this week a success if I continue to be conservative with my money in Atlanta and instead of spend my surplus, rolling it over into savings!

5.  I start Christmas shopping when I’ve heard several people say they’re finished! I’m horrible about waiting till the last minute but we have already purchased one present.  We took advantage of being in Philadelphia for our buying options!

Have a great weekend!

A picture is worth a thousand words

I go to a lot of cool places and do a lot of fun things. I like to take pictures of us in cool places and doing fun things. I shouldn’t hate pictures of myself so much that it makes me no longer want to have people take pictures of us. This is not acceptable to me.

When we went to the Phillies game last week, they had roaming photographers taking pictures of folks. Of course, I jumped at the chance. It meant I didn’t have to beg B for a picture and then beg a stranger to take it, but I knew this was a one time opportunity. It still took a brief coercion for B to oblige. We got a card telling us how to get the picture. I anxiously logged onto the site the next day and was horrified. Ugh.

I’m tempted to attach the photo so I have to be held more accountable. Maybe if I publicly talk about my goals, I’ll feel more desire to achieve them. Either that or I’d just stop blogging so I don’t have to face the music.

Right now, I’m just not happy about it.

Weekly Money Check Up

1. The most I’ve spent this last week was on our vacation.  I will admit, that I let more of my energy go to fretting about money than I’d have liked but overall, I declare it a success.

2. Today I feel much better towards money. I have made some financial changes that are going to be a good thing and that feels good.  All I can do is make steps in the right direction, every chance I get.

3. Money can’t buy happiness. One free/inexpensive thing I did last week that made me happy was drive through Valley Forge with B. and Grammie.  They have a audio tour on CD that you can buy, which we almost did, or you can use your cell phone to call a directory and get the same stories and descriptions over the phone. We hooked up the iPhone through the speakers and could dial up whatever we were seeing.

4. I will consider this week a success if I don’t shop online or in person and don’t overspend in Atlanta.

5. One of my most memorable birthdays was when my husband got me a special necklace that I had mentioned that I liked.  It was made from a typewriter key and we saw it in a specialty boutique in Chattanooga.  I’m certain he could have found it online and I’d have never known the difference, but he wanted to get the exact one that I said I liked. He had to sneak and give my father the money for it, as well as describe it, in detail, so my dad could know what to get.  It was no easy task.  No one wonders why I married this man…

Greetings from Asbury Park

Weekly Money Check Up

*This is kind of a back dated weekly post.  We left for vacation so I missed this post.  I do, however, know the answers to the questions for the week though.*

View from Stratton Meadow in Tellico

1. The most I’ve spent this last week was on my manicure and pedicure. I thought about only doing the manicure so it wouldn’t cost as much but I knew I’d be on the beach, so that wasn’t really an option.  And I have to have a manicure because I have acrylic nails.  That may seem like a luxury, but I franticly bite my nails.  I’ve tried everything to quit but I absolutely can’t.  Fake nails are the only resolution.  I wish they weren’t.

2. Today I feel very anxious about money. We are leaving for vacation and the rental car and hotel are making a serious dent in my funds.

3. Money can’t buy happiness. One free/inexpensive thing I did last week that made me happy was curl up with a good book.  Books cost money, yes, but this one was a gift, therefore free, so I’m counting it!

4. I will consider this week a success if I am able to enjoy my vacation without freaking out about money the whole time.

5. The thing I am most looking forward to about this autumn are another Phillies game with old friends in Atlanta, a cool camping trip for my beloved’s birthday party, and all around cooler weather.

Hate is not a family value.

Last week was tough because friends of mine were experiencing difficult times; they still are. But I was so impressed with the way communities leapt forward to offer condolences, prayers, food and literally, the shirts off their backs. It made me proud to be a part of the different groups of people here in East Tennessee.

This week, I’m attempting to prove that all people in Tennessee aren’t closed-minded bigots.

There have been many Facebook conversations about the so-called Ground Zero mosque.  It’s not at Ground Zero and it’s not even a mosque but people who benefit from inciting fear are squawking awfully loud that “they” shouldn’t be allowed to the “that”.  “They” is a group of people who want to build a community center and “that” is, well, build a community center. Never mind the community center isn’t going to be on the site of the World Trade Center, it’s two blocks away and you can’t even SEE Ground Zero from the site of the community center.  This “solemn” area that many are up in arms over, is not a sacred space filled with monuments to those that lost their lives where loved ones pause in reflection and prayer, it’s actually a busy and diverse city district. You can no more call it a “Ground Zero Mosque” than you call the deli a block away, the “Ground Zero Deli”  My personal favorite is the “Ground Zero Trashy Lingerie Store” or the “Less-acclaimed Ground Zero Strip Club” differentiating it from the “Ground Zero Strip Club”, but I digress…

We’ve been having our own uproar over the placement of a mosque in middle Tennessee.  It seems many of those who proclaim to support the Constitution, really only support it when they are afraid someone “wants to take away my guns!” and not the VERY FIRST AMENDMENT!  Well at the end of August, someone decided to set fire to the construction equipment at the site. Seemingly normal people rationalized that “we couldn’t yet say if it was arson or a hate crime, maybe it was just vandals”.

I think that’s what disturbs me the most. I expect we’ll always encounter extremists that do horrible things in the name of their belief system; I just don’t expect for the seemingly rational to excuse it or sometimes, as in the case of the community center in New York, even lightly endorse it.

In the last week, the home of a lesbian couple was burned to the ground. Arson is suspected since the word “Queers” was spray-painted on their garage door.  This happened less than 40 miles from my home.

Today, a burned Quran was found on the steps of a nearby mosque. It seemed to have also been shot with a shotgun.

At 2.2 miles, this hate is getting a little too close to home.

Weekly Money Check Up

I found this blog,  My Pretty Pennies, through one of the fashion sites I sporadically read, but I really liked the idea of a weekly money check up.  I know I need to do better with my budget and I am making some strides. Every little bit helps, I suppose, so here’s mine:

1. The most I’ve spent this last week was on dinner one of our favorite restaurants. It was following a funeral so I felt like doing something nice for my husband and me.

2. Today I feel a little smarter towards money.

3. Money can’t buy happiness. One free/inexpensive thing I did last week that made me happy was having friends over to our house on Monday.

4. I will consider this week a success if I don’t splurge on anything before our upcoming vacation.

5. My first job was technically babysitting or working for my aunt at her real estate office, but my first W-2 was for Uptown’s Deli and Yogurt Shoppe.

Someone somewhere is having the worst week of their life.

This week, it happened to a couple of really good people. I feel selfish even mentioning it because none of the struggles were actually mine but those of my friends. It’s never good when your friends make the local news.

Our friend Jay Pfaffman’s house burned down this week. He, his dog Thor, and Thor’s kitty all made it out safely, thank goodness, but his house is gone. I stopped by yesterday and it’s heartbreaking to see someone’s life and all their belongings become a pile of ashes. People always say, “What would you grab if your house was on fire?” thinking that’s a reasonable thing to ask. Jay only had time to get himself out. Thankfully, the firefighters got to Thor.

And finally my dear friend Karen’s mother-in-law passed away in a freak motorcycle accident.  Eva Maria was an outgoing, life-loving, rambunctious woman.  Heck, she died at 73  in a wreck on her new Harley! That should tell you something.  I hate that my friends are hurting because they will no doubt miss her but she lived her life.  Of that we can be sure. I also hate that I didn’t get the chance to know her as well as I soon would have. She would have been my neighbor when we build our house. And what a neighbor she’d have been.

I am an avid blog reader

I loved to read blogs. I love to write. I love to facebook and I love to tweet. Why, oh why can I not find 15 minutes a week to update my freaking blog?  I’m not THAT busy.  Although, I have been really busy.  (I just typed “busty”, heh. I guess I’m that too.)

We had a sales blitz at my place of employ which meant I was working about 10 hour days and constantly trying to think of ways to produce big and bigger sales.  By the time I got home from work each day, my brain was so tired, I literally had a hard time making decisions about what to eat for dinner.  That’s bad.

Anyway.  Here are a few things I’ve been enjoying on the interwebs and in real life:

Adrienne Martini’s blog – she’s a writer, professor and a mom.  She’d probably reorder that list, but I’m not a mom and it’s my blog, so it stays.  Anyway, she’s funny and smart and on her ?Many things Make a Post” series ALWAYS seems to have two or more things I love. Lately my facebook links page looks more like an homage to Adrienne than my own thoughts.

She’s Still Got It - Lindsay Ferrier from Suburban Turmoil and the Nashville Scene bring her style blog to Cafe Stir. I’m finding that I don’t agree with everything she’s says about fashion, I love her updates and look forward to them.

Leslie Wylie’s Eventing Blog – my friend Leslie’s a champion in the equestrian sport of eventing, but amid all of the beautiful images of horses, she illustrates an honest,  funny and sometimes touching story of a girl just doing what she’s loves and trying to make a go of it.
